THE FOURTH PROJECT MEETING AT HÄÄDEMEESTE SECONDARY
SCHOOL AT HÄÄDEMEESTE, PÄRNU COUNTY, ESTONIA
All the partners
– from Germany, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Latvia - could participate and the total number of
teachers and students visiting Estonia was exactly 50.
The days were
full of activities. On the first day of stay we were at Häädemeeste. It started
with a lesson about educational system of Estonia by our English teacher Viktor
Koop. Then, the students according to their choice took part in the lessons. After
that, there was a welcome meeting at the local community house. Songs in the
guests’ native languages were sung and Estonian traditional dances were danced
by primary class children. Toomas Abel from the local municipality made a
speech about how important it is for a small town to be a part of an
international multilateral project. Students’ Self-Government of Häädemeeste
Secondary School welcomed the guests.
After the meeting a tour around Häädemeeste was
organised for the guests – to the local churches, to the museum, to the local
library where an exhibition about the guests’ books in Estonian was on.
The day continued with different activities but the
main task was to start a film about school rules. Students school by school had
prepared to introduce the rules and regulations in their school (classroom rules,
using the mobile phones, ipods etc in the class, skipping classes, wearing
clothes or school uniform etc) and analyse them. The students were interviewed
about the rules and restrictions.
On the following days the important landmarks of Estonian statehood were
shown and introduced. We visited the capital city, Tallinn; an island of Kihnu,
full of traditions; and a county capital, Pärnu where first the independence of
Estonia was declared. As Estonia is
known by its pure nature and Häädemeeste is a small borough between the Baltic
sea and the forests and bogs, we could not go past the Forest Management Centre
in Kabli, the village by the sea, and Tolkuse bog by the highway - via Baltica.
The location of Estonia has also had the significant meaning in the development
towards the independent republic.
The meeting was full of success as all the aims, we
have focused on, were achieved. One of the aims, locally, was to improve the
co-operation not only between students and teachers but also with the families,
the community and between the nations through an active involment in different
activities and democratic processes. The whole school could take part in the
project -the primary classes prepared the welcome posters, secondary school
students were active participating in discussing over the school rules and
helping organising the project meeting. Families got new experiences having
foreign friends at their homes and the community was involved as different
institutions welcomed the guests and had prepared exhibitions.
Futhermore, European common values – promoting the
importance of cultural and linguistic diversity within Europe and the idea of
Lifelong Learning – were supported.
