RULES AT ESTONIAN SCHOOL
Rules at Latvian School
A poster by Latvian partners
Most Estonian schools do not have very strict rules – if the schools are in a small town or countryside. However, schools in the capital city Tallinn have even electronic registration cards – mostly for security reasons or to show off.
Our school has a lot of written rules but only a few are really important in everyday life. We might say that practicality prevails and dominates over discipline.
You should not be late, you should keep your class and lockers clean etc. We have to change our shoes for slippers or other shoes, we have to wash our hands before eating and clean up after lunch.Formally, we are not allowed to drink or eat in classroom – but nobody minds as far as you do not litter and keep it clean. So, in real life just follow common sense ans you can’t go wrong.I think that there should be as few laws and regulations at school as possible. If thereare too many and nobody will stick to the rules. There are quite a lot written by Ministry of Education which cannot be followed anyway – like the weight of schoolbags and the number of tests we can take daily. Schoolbags are too heavy but we cannot leave behind our sportswear, books and gadgets. Some subjects are on Monday – we should not have homework but we do – because its not possible to get any grades. In fact, there are too many tests at the end of the term and some teachers have to cancel them. It is not possible to foresee all the cold days in winter when we do not come to school and the waves of flu and we lose classes – so who to blame. A wise compromise should be a rule not written regulations.Rules at school should be for organising our daily routine not to frame us with discipline. Our school has few but practical rules and regulations.

  •          Change your boots and shoes for slippers or summer shoes. Keep your locker tidy.
  •          Wash your hands before eating. After lunch clean the table.
  •          If you come by bike, keep it in the bikeholder.
  •          Change for P.E classes. Wear your sportswear only in sports classes. Take it home for a wash!
  •          Raise your hand if you want tot ask a question.
  •          Be polite with your classmates and teachers. Say „hello“ and „goodbye“!
  •          Keep your mobile phones and other electronic gadgets switched off and in your bag during the classes.
